The Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Prof. Chris Bode, has called for concerted efforts by medical practitioners in Nigeria to build the confidence of patients in the health sector.
Bode said this on Thursday at the inauguration of the third annual general meeting and scientific conference of the Critical Society of Nigeria in Lagos, with the theme ‘Sepsis: Current Concepts and Management.’

The Medical Director,  who also served as the chief host/special guest of honour at the event, added, “Lagos has 14 consultant anaesthetists, which is the largest pool of anaesthetists in the country. We need to create a curriculum for critical care.
“I want this to be a reality; we need to create a curriculum for training. Then, we can push it through the postgraduate colleges. This is the way in which we will start having well-rounded practitioners of health who will do this great what we are doing”
Bode also noted that the intensive care unit in LUTH was “the cheapest in Lagos at N250,000 a week.”
He added, “The plan is to decentralise the old ICUs, so we now have the cardiac ICU, the centre for ICU in the medical ward, the stroke centre. We have our own high dependency unit now.
“A patient was shot by armed robbers and brought to LUTH a few years ago. We did everything we should for this patient and further medical research said the patient needed to be ventilated so he wouldn’t tire out.
“Promptly, some very rich members of his family decided to fly him out, as unstable as he was, to South Africa. He died before he got to South Africa. Some of us will remember this. We failed in not giving confidence to the Nigerian public that we do good things.
“We need to build confidence in what we do. There was another woman who was admitted to a private hospital. Because of some catastrophe, she lost half of her brain and had a stroke  We operated on her; she developed cardiac arrest three times and was resuscitated by people who sit in this audience. At the end of the day, she survived.”

UCH turns Shoprite as car park carries tarrif

UCH is making life hard for us as patients. we pay thousands here in this hospital so is it going to be okay or nice enough to start paying for parking space too. this another means of privatization that we are shouting we don't want. this was said by a patient glancing through the fee when the press crew was moving around the venue. Another patient said, only places where people catch fun is where gate fee or park spaces are paid for. But imagine we have a family member here lying down, we are yet to gather the funds for that, so it is car parking tariff that we should be looking for now  . The security man in charge said that was what he saw early today, he also said he does not think it is the next thing to do but when the C.S.O comes tomorrow we will ask pressing questions like are staffs going to be paying too? we look forward for good things not privatization again.
